I am a God-fearing positive person. May be quiet, but never make myself unapproachable. I enjoy writing, nature, and people. One thing that I will share with everyone is that I don't search in life, I don't search success, love and happiness. Rather, I work hard and then the rewards that are due are awarded to me.

Locked Girls and the Outside World

Many people are prejudice when it comes to individuals who own locks in their hair. Some tend to think that they smoke a lot of “bud” or locks are very dirty and so is the person. I remember when I first locked my hair, how people looked at me walking down the street. It was a different stare from when I had my regular hair. The looks and stares went from a quick glance to a stare which were sometimes negative and positive. But I will and can never forget being denied from a job that had already become mine.
Since the day I started my locks, I always tried to maintain it and keep it neat. Before having them, I researched negative comments and reviews as well as the positive. I read about how managers would sometimes feel a certain way when their employers are locked. I did not understand what the issue was until that day. I had applied to work in Ben&Jerry’s in Park Slope nearby a hospital I volunteered for a couple of days. I needed a temporary job where I could pay off some things that needed to be done. First off, my older cousin was a employee who have worked there for approximately 3 years, so she was giving me a easy hand. The manager had already said that I was hired because of the description he gave her, yet still wanted to have an interview with me. By the end of the interview, I was told that I would be called back but at the moment the job was not mind. I had already known my locks were the issue because he could not take his eyes off of it. What else would be the problem?
In relation to Mr. Staples, people have placed us into a category because of past incidents of people who have the “symptom” to their prejudice thoughts. Even before getting to know Brent, he became a victim to something that was false. I am not sure what the manager thought, but I already knew that his thoughts were wrong. To resolve this issue, I learned to always have a clean look from head to toe. Though at times people thoughts can be the last thing I care for, I try to make people feel comfortable because I am not harmful. Brent Staples also tried to soften his persona just so others may feel comfortable.

  1. Rachel,
This is a very deep entry. I can relate to your experience. When my mother first got dreads she would constantly be asked silly and stere-typical questions by ignorant people like "Are you a rasta?". I know she was annoyed at times at their ignorance, but I liked how you handled your situation. Very mature of you to be the bigger person especially considering you were discriminated against simply because of your hairstyle.

  2. Thanks Jherelle! Come to think of it, I'm actually glad I maintained my feelings in a mature way, because I would just make his thoughts even worse than they were.
